notes from the studio:
If you've been with me for most of this past decade, you know that so much of my technique and language began with palette knives and ocean painting.
Sam and I held our final open studio night back in the fall, before we closed it up for good. To make it interactive, I had a big canvas out with my paints and brushes and invited our guests to paint on the canvas: everyone added a special touch, and it all lives under the watery layers of ocean I've been adding.
There is a road on Folly Beach that I have been running for years, all the way towards the lighthouse, and it's covered in graffiti. By the end of the open studio night, the canvas reminded me of that road.
It felt fitting and cathartic to close this chapter with a final Folly Beach ocean painting with the graffiti underneath. I'll forever look back on this decade as the simplest and most complex time in my life, and I am grateful beyond articulation for the individuals I've met and get to keep.
The 'current' is an unseen force I return to often. It has an unbiased wisdom, and it's been pulling me forward through every major hurdle so far, and I'm still here. The current keeps me good company. I even tattooed the 4 dots on my left arm, for my own personal reminder: it's a steady rhythm, and it's as simple as one foot in front of of the other.
